Pingree Statement on President Trump's State of the Union Address

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) tonight released the following statement on President Trump's State of the Union.

President Trump's remarks were full of misleading claims about our economy, climate change, and health care, to name a few.

Millions of Americans with pre-existing conditions, like my State of the Union guest, Kings Floyd, are worried about the future of their health care because of the Administration's constant attacks on the ACA. President Trump tonight claimed to support health care access but, his administration has done nothing to stop a lawsuit that would overturn the landmark Affordable Care Act, including the protections for patients pre-existing conditions.

I was appalled that President Trump boasted about throwing 7 million Americans off of low-income food assistance and 10 million Americans off of the social safety net. I don't believe that encouraging hunger or poverty helps anyone participate in our economy.

Moreover, it is reckless for any President to keep our country addicted to fossil fuels in the midst of a climate emergency. President Trump's inability to move us toward renewable energy is another example of his administration's denial of science and a historic mistake.
